The bullets kept coming.
I look again at my gun.
Still three bullets.
I look to my partner Jim Gall whose been shot and bleeding. He's looking back at me. His eyes are fading. He's dying. And quickly. He knows this is the end for him - and probably for me.
That's when he does the unthinkable.
He slides his gun across the floor to me.
I look over to him, "What are you doing?"
"I'm not going to make it," he stammered over the words, blood trickling from the corner of his lips. "You can't get to me. Take my gun. You have more bullets now. Nail that son of a bitch. Nail him to the wall. Make this worth it... make this..."
And with those last words, my partner for the last two years, is gone.
I take Jim's gun into my hands.
I look beneath the car I am taking cover behind. I can see one of the criminal's feet behind one of the shelves in the warehouse. I take good aim and I fire one shot from my gun.
The bullet impacts against the criminal's ankle. He screams and falls. He won't be a problem anymore. Placing the gun against the car's side mirror - I take aim and fire - it doesn't sever the mirror - but leaves it dangling. I break it off the rest of the way.
One more bullet in my gun. Six in Jim's.
I run for cover behind one of the barrels in the warehouse. Two shots ring off the metallic cylinder. I close my eyes and listen for the next shot. It bounces off the barrel again. Now I know where you are. I use the mirror to peek around the barrel - and I wait until I see the perp stick his head out again - and when he does - I stand and fire.
No more shots left in my gun, and the perp falls with a bullet to the chest.
Six more bullets in Jim's gun.
There's at least one more in this place. One more plus Ceaser "Blood" Gonzales himself.
I find Ceaser "Blood" Gonzales' last minion by the exit. This isn't good. If he's by the exit he's covering for Ceaser "Blood" Gonzales' escape. I have no time for cover or anything fancy.
He fires a few shots at me, and I just keep walking at him. I take aim - and fire. Another shot to the chest and he crumbles.
No time.
I run for the exit - but by the time I get there - it's already too late.
Ceaser "Blood" Gonzales had made a call and a helicopter had landed in the back parking lot. He was already in the air. I unloaded - knowing it would do no good - but prayed I would get a lucky shot and hit the gasoline tank.
It doesn't happen.
Once again Ceaser "Blood" Gonzales has gotten away - and this time taken the lives of two good cops with him.
I am going to find that bastard. And I am going to kill him. Even if he surrenders to me.
Ceaser "Blood" Gonzales will die.
I turn and look back at the carnage within the warehouse. So many lives wasted. I radio headquarters and let them know that Ceaser "Blood" Gonzales has escaped. "10-108, we have two officers down."
"10-4, what's the status on Ceaser Gonzales?" the shoulder CB crackled.
"Escaped via helicopter," I respond.
"What's the status on Jim and Ken?" the CB crackled.
"Dead," I say, flatly.
"10-4," the CB voice crackled back. It's Davis. He knew both Jim and Ken pretty well. We all did.
And someone is going to pay.
